Minor injuries were reported by people involved in a two-vehicle collision that occurred about 7:30 a.m. Saturday on Route 17 near Cooper Road on the Whitefield/Chelsea town line.

Maine State Police Sgt. Patrick Hood said that black ice, which popped up unexpectedly on the roadway Saturday morning, caused a Chevrolet Camaro’s driver to lose control and sideswipe a Chevrolet Trailblazer hauling a trailer. The trailer then flipped over.

Hood said the 1998 Camaro, driven by Gilleyanne Davis-Oakes, 17, of Vinalhaven, was heading eastbound, and the Trailblazer, driven by Norman Theberge, 68, of Union, was headed west on Route 17 with his wife Susan Theberge, 60, as a passenger.

Augusta and Chelsea fire departments responded to assist, Hood said.

He said the Theberges had been driving the trailer to a craft show at the Augusta Civic Center, but instead chose to return home after the accident.

While no one was taken to the hospital, Hood said there were minor injuries. All those involved were wearing seatbelts, and Hood said no charges are anticipated.
