AUGUSTA — A judge on Tuesday set bail at $5,000 cash for a city man accused of stabbing another man Saturday night while a woman removed her belongings from an apartment.
Bradford E. Buck, 63, of Augusta, is charged with aggravated assault in the attack, which sent a South China man to the hospital with injuries to his face and ear. Buck had an initial court appearance at the Capital Judicial Center via video from the Kennebec County jail, and Judge Evert Fowle set the bail amount.
Police responded about 9:45 p.m. Saturday to a report of a woman screaming in the parking lot of the Augusta Quick Mart, at 25 Western Ave., according to an affidavit filed by Augusta police Officer Desmond Nutter.
They arrested the woman, Bonnie French, 45, on a Somerset County warrant charging her with failure to pay a fine. She told them she was being evicted. Then police were called to MaineGeneral Medical Center because someone had come for treatment following a stabbing.
At the hospital, Paul Michaud, 46, of South China, reported Buck had stabbed him in the Augusta Quick Mart parking lot. Michaud told police that he, Bonnie French, Reggie French and another woman had gone to help retrieve some of French’s belongings from Buck’s Melville Street apartment.
Nutter reported that when Bonnie French came out of the apartment and went back to the vehicle, Buck “approached Paul with a knife and stabbed him two times. Once in Paul’s lower right ear and one in Paul’s upper right lip.”
Nutter wrote that the other woman with the group said Buck and Michaud had “exchanged words” prior to the stabbing and that Buck was “intoxicated, slurring his words and staggering,”
Police obtained a warrant for Buck’s arrest, and he was taken to the jail at 2:30 Sunday afternoon.
In November 2014, Buck was sentenced to four years in prison, with all but 90 days suspended and two years of probation, after he was convicted of stealing drugs and unlawful possession of oxycodone, which occurred Nov. 30, 2013, as well as a second count of unlawful possession of oxycodone and violating condition of release Oct. 7, 2014, all in Augusta.
Buck also was convicted of violating conditions of release; operating under the influence; operating while license suspended or revoked; failing to stop, remain, provide information; and disorderly conduct, fighting, all May 29, 2014, in Winthrop.
Bonnie French was released from the Kennebec County jail Tuesday after arrangements were made to pay her fine.
