AUGUSTA — Several fire departments went Friday night to fight a fire at an abandoned house on North Belfast Avenue.
The blaze was reported at 8:08 p.m. and firefighters were still working to put out the fire an hour later. Augusta Deputy Fire Chief Dave Groder said it would be some time before the fire was completely out.
The state fire marshal’s office was expected to go to the scene Saturday, and the fire was considered suspicious, according to Sgt. Vicente Morris, of the Augusta Police Department.
Ron McPherson said he has lived across the street from the house on North Belfast Avenue for about six years, and that the home has been vacant for many years.
He said one day the homeowners, whom he declined to identify, had moved out and left behind furniture, clothing and other personal belongings.
The Winthrop, Chelsea, Vassalboro and Togus fire departments assisted Augusta firefighters.
