FAIRFIELD — A driver traveling southbound on Interstate 95 fell asleep at the wheel and rolled his vehicle into a ditch Tuesday morning.

The driver, Calvin Bishop, 65, of New Limerick, was driving Tuesday morning when he fell asleep behind the wheel, according to Maine State Police Trooper Joseph Chretien. It was not a medical issue, Chretien said, and Bishop simply fell asleep.

The crash occurred near Exit 133 in Fairfield at 8:23 a.m.

Chretien said Bishop’s truck toppled and rolled into a nearby ditch, but he missed the guardrails entirely and did not hit any other vehicles. He did have to be cut out of his truck. Chretien said Bishop was pinned in the vehicle, but was otherwise talking and moving all his limbs.

Bishop was transported to Inland Hospital in Waterville to get checked out for non life-threatening injuries.
