One of two people charged with murder in the July slaying of a woman in Washington County made an initial appearance in court Friday.
Quaneysha Greeley, 19, of New York City and formerly of Lewiston, did not enter a plea during the brief appearance, according to a Superior Court clerk. She will be held without bail pending a hearing next week.
Greeley and Carine Reeves, 37, also of New York City, have been charged with the murder of Sally Shaw, 55, of New Gloucester, whose body was found July 19 on a rural roadside in the town of Cherryfield.
Shaw’s abandoned rental car was discovered about 11 miles away with front-end damage, at the intersection of Route 93 and Route 9. It was clear the vehicle, rented in Bangor, had been in an accident, but police have not said whether the accident was connected to Shaw’s death or how it may have occurred.
A week after Shaw’s body was found, police arrested Reeves and Greeley in New York. Initially, both refused to waive their extradition rights and were being held without bail in Queens County.
Greeley waived extradition this week and is now at the Washington County Jail in Machias. Reeves, however, remains in New York pending unrelated charges there. He is accused of slashing a 36-year-old female acquaintance in the face from an ear to a nostril, requiring 16 to 20 stitches, and is not likely to be returned to Maine until that case is resolved, according to the Maine Attorney General’s Office.
Police have not released any details about how Shaw died or any possible motive Greeley or Reeves may have had. An arrest affidavit filed with the court remains sealed. Assistant Attorney General Leane Zainea declined to comment Friday about why it was still sealed.
Shaw’s daughter, Heather Senechiame, said in an interview last month that she didn’t know Reeves or Greeley, nor did she know how or whether her mother might have known them. She said her mother was sassy and free-spirited but loving.
“She was the best grandmother I could’ve ever asked for my children. She helped me raise them exactly how I was raised and they are beautiful, independent children that will live with the memory of their grandmother for all days,” Senechiame said.
The only hints that Shaw may have known the suspects came from Facebook: Shaw was friends with Greeley on the social media site, as well as with a woman identified in posts as Greeley’s mother, Melissa Greeley.
In one Facebook exchange between Melissa Greeley and Shaw in 2015, Greeley posted a note saying, in part, “Life is starting to look up for me,” and Shaw wrote “You deserve only the best in life!”
Attempts by the Portland Press Herald to reach Melissa Greeley have not been successful.
Greeley and Reeves face 25 years to life in prison if convicted of murder.
