Maine State Police said Sunday that two people escaped injury Saturday evening after their car suddenly burst into flames on Interstate-95 in Sidney.

Trooper Jacob M. Roddy said the report of a car fire came in at about 6 p.m. Saturday from the area of mile marker 123, in the northbound lanes of the Interstate. Roddy, along with Trooper Sam Tlumac and Cpl. Rick Moody responded to the scene.

The vehicle was a white 2010 Chrysler Sebring.

The driver, Gregory Hall, of Willimantic, said the vehicle “made a loud noise and things started falling from the underside of the vehicle,” Roddy said in an email early Sunday morning.

Hall reportedly told police that when he pulled over, the vehicle was already in flames. Both Hall and his passenger made it away safely from the vehicle, the trooper said.

Both northbound lanes were closed to all traffic during the fire, he said. The Sidney Fire Department arrived on scene and extinguished the flames. The road was reopened after approximately 30 minutes. The vehicle was a total loss.
