CLINTON — Police continue to investigate an apparent kidnapping that occurred early Tuesday, but they have no new information on the case.
Senior Patrol Officer Karl Roy said police have tried unsuccessfully to talk to the woman reported to be the victim.
“That’s where we’ve been at,” Roy said. “We’ve attempted to make contact with the victim, and the victim has not cooperated by answering our phone calls.”
Police received a report around 2 a.m. Tuesday that a Newport woman had gone to a residence to help a man paint a barn. The man was reported to have tied the woman up and kept her in the basement for a day.
A person later picked the woman up on the road and reported the incident to police.
After speaking with police, the woman identified as the victim told police she was busy and cut the conversation short. Since then, she has been uncooperative in communicating with police.
The woman gave police the first name of the man she said kidnapped her, but Roy said police had not made progress tracking that person down without a last name.
Roy said a detective sergeant would continue to work on the case Wednesday afternoon.
“We’re going to attempt to locate (the victim) and continue the investigation,” Roy said, “but nothing new has changed from her initial contact with us.”
