The Maine high school golf season ended last October, but a few Maine high school players competed Wednesday in the New England high school golf championship at Bretwood Golf Course, in Keene, New Hampshire.

Scarborough’s Anthony Burnham shot 75 for the best finish among Maine boys, tied for 12th place. Mitchell Tarrio of Kents Hill School was one stroke behind Burnham at 75, and Chris Kauppila of Old Town shot 76.

Maine Central Institute teammates Carter Pearl and Eric Dugas each shot 81, finishing in a tie for 32nd. Other Maine boys competing were Gorham’s Lucas Roop (78), Mattanawcook’s Logan Thompson (79), Old Town’s Cole Daniel (82), Tyler Worcester of Fryeburg (82), Ryan Collins of Cape Elizabeth (83), Greely’s Tate Porter (83), and Hodgdon’s Ben Tuttle (84).

Ryan Quinn of Winnacunnet High in New Hampshire won with a score of 66, three strokes ahead of a trio of golfers in second place.

In the girls tournament, Greely’s Rachel Smith was the top Maine finisher with a 78 to tie for 11th place. Smith was one stroke ahead of Lincoln Academy’s Bailey Plourde (79). Kate Dixon of Carrabec was the top central Maine finisher, shooting 82 for a tie in 22nd place.

Other Maine girls competeting were Erin Holmes of Greely (80), Scarborough’s Elizabeth Lacognata (81), Stephanie Rodrigue of Lewiston (82), Janelle Bryant of St. Dominic (86), and Markella Gammaitoni of St. Dominic (92).

Lauren Thobodeau of Pinkerton Academy in New Hampshire was the girls winner, beating Isabella Premkumar of Groton Dunstable (Mass.) in a playoff.

The 98th Maine Amateur will be July 11-13 at Brunswick Golf Club, which will host the tournament for the first time since 1997.

Eighteen players earned a spot in the Maine Am field by qualifying Thursday at Penobcot Valley. Thirty-seven players qualified for the Maine Am last week at Biddeford-Saco Country Club, and 27 more qualified at Poland Spring onTuesday. That fills 82 of the 132 spots in the Maine Am. Each player who made the cut in last year’s tournament at the York Golf and Tennis Club is except from qualifying for the 132-player field.

The Women’s Tri-State Golf Championship is staying in Vermont. The tournament, featuring some of the top players from Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire, was held Tuesday and Wednesday at Manchester Country Club, in Mancheter, Vermont. The host Vermont squad continued its recent domination of the event, winning for the eighth consecutive year.

Wednesday’s final day was match play. Two Vermont golfers, Trish Wade and Patty McGrath, won the maximum six points in the individual matches. Vermont finished with 146.5 points, just one point ahead of New Hampshire. Maine was third with 113 points.

New Hampshire held the lead after Day 1, a two-person alternate shot format in a three-way match, with 49 points. Vermont entered Wednesday in second place with 43.5 points, with Maine third at 42.5.

Along with the team competition, alternate’s from each state played a two-day stroke play tournament. Ginny Chenoweth of the Country Club of Vermont won with a two-day gross score of 181 on the par-72 course.
