SKOWHEGAN — Consecutive snow days at Mount View High School meant consecutive days without practice for the Mustangs. That concerned coach Chad Larrabee going into Friday’s regular season finale at Skowhegan.
“We kind of had to put in a game plan on the fly,” Larrabee said.
Whatever rust the Mustangs had, they shook off in a dominant second quarter. It was there Mount View pulled away, taking a 49-40 Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference win.
Both teams end the regular season 9-9 and await playoff seeding — Mount View in Class B North and Skowhegan in Class A North.
After taking an 8-6 lead late in the first quarter, the Mustangs opened the second with a 10-2 run. Mount View consistently outhustled Skowhegan in the second, getting to loose balls, crashing the boards, and scoring in transition.
“They set the tone. They worked harder than us,” Skowhegan coach Tom Nadeau said.
Skowhegan also struggled to find offense against Mount View’s 2-3 zone defense.
“We played (zone) against them last time and it worked,” said Mount View senior Devon Davis, who grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.
Nadeau said that early in the season, the Indiana struggled against zones, but had played better against them of late.
“Their zone, for whatever reason, gave us a hard time. We prepped for it,” Nadeau said.
The Mustangs led by as much as 14 points in the second half, and Skowhegan could get no closer than seven.
Colby Furrow scored 20 to lead Mount View, while Joey Danna added 13 points. Garrett McSweeney led Skowhegan with 13 points.
