The Winthrop Town Council has requested that any residents wishing to fill the seat that was held by David Bubier, who died two weeks ago after a battle with cancer, contact Town Manager Peter Nielsen by the end of the week.

The council will consider appointing Bubier’s replacement at a special meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, Nielsen said, and three people already have expressed interest.

The person selected Monday will serve in Bubier’s seat until June, when a longer-term replacement will be elected, according to a process laid out in the Town Charter. The replacement who is elected this June will hold the council seat until 2018, when Bubier’s term was scheduled to end.

A similar process played out in January 2016 when Ken Buck Sr. died and his widow, Barbara Buck, assumed his seat on the seven-member council until the following June. She was then elected to serve the rest of his term and re-elected last fall.

Nielsen said anyone interested in being considered for Bubier’s position should submit a letter that outlines relevant work and life experience so that councilors not familiar with the person will have something to base their votes on.

The council already has begun discussing next year’s budget and hopes to fill Bubier’s seat soon so that all hands are on deck as the process ramps up in the winter and spring, Nielsen said.
