A 56-year-old New Hampshire man died in Baxter State Park Sunday after getting separated from his group as they skied out of the park, authorities said.
The man, whose name was not released, was skiing 17 miles from Chimney Pond to Abol Bridge when he became separated from the six other people in his group.
The rest of the group reported him missing to police when they arrived at Abol Bridge. Two hikers later found him unresponsive in the outlet of Abol Pond, according to Baxter State Park officials.
Deputy Chief Thomas Malcolm of the Millinocket Fire Department said there was no apparent trauma and the man was pronounced dead on the scene. Malcolm said a medical issue could have been the cause, but a forensic examiner will determine whether an autopsy or further investigation is warranted.
Messages to Baxter State Park administrators and to a spokesman for the Maine Warden Service were not immediately returned.
