FALMOUTH — Courtney Sullivan proved to be a matchup nightmare on Monday night as she led the Greely girls’ hockey team to a 2-0 win over previously unbeaten Falmouth at Family Ice Arena
Twice in the first period the 5-foot-11 Sullivan flashed a devastating combination of speed and stick-handling give the Rangers an early two-goal lead.
“Courtney’s not going to be denied,” said Greely Coach Nate Guerin. “She’s going to get her chances. She’s fast, she’s got hands, and she’s got reach. Her ability to put the puck around the D and go get it or put it around them and outskate them is something you don’t see a lot. You just don’t see that height or reach, and her touch to finish at the net is just awesome. She can put the puck just about wherever she wants to and it helps win games like this.”
With just over eight minutes remaining in the first period, Sullivan collected a pass from Bridget Roberts just behind center ice. Sullivan used an impressive crossover to slip the puck past a pair of defenders, faked right as she approached the net and unleashed a wrist shot into the top left corner to give the Rangers (7-1) a 1-0 advantage.
Sullivan then made it 2-0 with under a minute to go in the period. She picked up a loose puck in the Rangers’ end and took off up the ice. This time she worked her way through three defenders – finally emerging from the traffic in front of the net to send another wrist shot into the same top corner with 58 seconds left.
“She’s tall and she’s very shifty, so stopping her isn’t something one player can typically handle,” said Falmouth Coach Rob Carrier. “We try to position our players so she has multiple layers to get through, and those two goals, she got through them. Credit to her, because I thought defensively we played really well against her.”
The Rangers controlled the pace of play almost throughout the second period, but Falmouth goalie Ally Hurdman made sure they weren’t able to capitalize – turning away 15 shots in the period.
“(Hurdman) played great” said Guerin.
“We wanted to test her and we put pucks on her from all over the place. She’s a captain and she really did a nice job keeping them in it and I think her teammates really responded. She was awesome tonight.”
The third period went much the same way the second did, with Greely controlling the puck. Falmouth only recorded three shots on goal in the period. Hurdman again turned away 15 shots and finished with 35 saves.
Nica Todd turned away 11 shots for the shutout.
“Our goalie did a great job, and we worked really hard on the breakout just to clear the puck and make sure they didn’t get many shots,” said Sullivan. “We also just really focused on clearing their forwards any time they were in front of our net.”
