A sauna that was heated by a wood stove and located in a small building near a Manchester home burned down Tuesday evening, according to Chief Clarence “Bug” Cram, of the Manchester Fire Department.
The residents of the Belgrade Road home discovered the small wooden building was on fire after their friend used the sauna earlier in the day, Cram said. He said the building, which was about 10 feet long and 12 feet wide and at least 50 feet from the home, was a total loss.
The fire was related to the wood stove that powered the sauna, Cram said, but he did not know what caused the sauna’s cedar interior to burn.
No one was injured in the fire, Cram said.
Firefighters received a call about the fire at 6:37 p.m. and needed about 45 minutes to knock it down, plus more time to clean up afterward, Cram said. All departments from the Lakes Regional Mutual Aid group responded to the fire, including those in Manchester, Readfield, Wayne, Mount Vernon, Fayette and Vienna.
The Belgrade Road property is owned by Randy Violette, Cram said.
