AUGUSTA — Two men, both from out of state, were arrested on drug trafficking charges Wednesday after police stopped their car on Western Avenue and found roughly 100 grams of crack cocaine, said Sgt. Alfred Morin, of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office, in a Thursday afternoon news release.

The men were Javonne Davis, 23, of Brooklyn, New York, and Marcus Mclaughlin, 22, of Cliffside Park, New Jersey. They were each charged with aggravated trafficking of crack cocaine — a class A crime punishable by up to 30 years in jail and a $50,000 fine — and possession of crack cocaine, Morin said.

Police estimated the street value of the drugs to be $10,000 to $15,000. They also found a small amount of marijuana in the car.

“This is a significant amount of crack cocaine that was seized today,” Morin said in the release. “This amount of crack represents the largest seizure made from a traffic stop by Kennebec Sheriff’s Deputies.”

A third person in the car was searched by police and released, Morin added.

Working with members of the Augusta Police Department, the sheriff’s office made the stop after receiving outside information about the alleged trafficking. Davis and Mclaughlin were then taken to the Kennebec County jail. Each man’s bail was set at $50,000 cash.

Morin did not provide a time of the arrest, but the Augusta Police Department call log indicates officers assisted another agency on Western Avenue at 2:41 p.m. Wednesday.

Morin said the investigation is still open and that others are expected to be charged later.

In December 2015, Davis, then 22 and living in Augusta, was sentenced to 15 months in jail for unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs Feb. 3, 2015, in Augusta. He was fined $400.
