SKOWHEGAN — Selectmen on Tuesday honored town police officer Timothy Williams for his Dec. 2 rescue of a mother and her 4-year-old son from their burning mobile home.
Williams, who was the first one to arrive at the burning home at 279 North Ave., was hailed as a hero following the blaze. He crawled on his belly through thick smoke and first saw Andrea Curtis, 24, and then her son, Tyler Curtis-Benson, 4.
Andrea Curtis was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where she remained Tuesday in critical condition, according to her father, Brian Curtis.
“Andrea is still critical, but she’s doing extremely well and she is a Christmas miracle,” he said.
Tyler, who was taken to Shriners Hospital in Boston, was “on his way home now as we speak,” Brian Curtis said.
Brian Curtis praised Officer Williams and said the town honor was well deserved.
“How many people would just throw their life and make a stupid decision like he did and save another’s life? That’s a true hero,” he said. “In truth, we could have an officer and a mother and son all — could have all perished in that — that was extreme. I think the honor is well deserved.”
