Regular passenger train service between Boston and Maine is resuming this week after a tie replacement project finished ahead of schedule, according to the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority.

Full Downeaster service between Portland and Boston resumed today, eliminating the need to continue a temporary bus service between Portland and Wells. Bus transportation will continue to be provided for passengers travelling north of Portland to Freeport and Brunswick through Friday.

The Downeaster will begin operating a new schedule with expanded service to Freeport and Brunswick on Monday in time for the busy Thanksgiving travel period.

The rail authority had expected to continue bus service for the entire Boston to Maine route until next week.
