Veteran Bill Marinelli spent much of the last few years living in a car or a homeless shelter, but on Monday, he was at the White House to take part in the White House Veterans Homelessness Summit.

Thanks to help from his community and the VA Maine Healthcare System, Marinelli, of Kittery, is no longer homeless.

The event included members of President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama’s staffs, representatives from several federal agencies and elected officials and community leaders from across the country.

According to the White House website, the summit included panels and group discussions showcasing the journeys of homeless veterans, the challenges for communities working to end veterans’ homelessness, a celebration of those communities that have succeeded in ending it and ways to end to veterans’ homelessness.

Marinelli flew to Washington, D.C., his first time on a plane in over 30 years, and said on the VA Maine Healthcare Systems’ Facebook page that he was treated well by the flight crew, much as he’s been treated since leaving his car and having a place to call home.

The Facebook page indicated it would post a new video of Marinelli in the coming weeks.
