Karin Zimba, a Waterville Junior High School sixth grader, recently won the 2016 MEGAT Distinguished Student Award.

Once a year the Maine Educators of the Gifted and Talented organization recognizes one student between grades fourth through eighth that has distinguished him or herself in academics, leadership and or the arts.

Karin is a gifted and talented student in all available areas of academic study. She is also the state of Maine winner and a top national finalist in the Doodle for Google national art competition.

Her MEGAT award was based upon her numerous art awards, her academic achievements as well as recommendations from her teachers and principal.

Karin was also asked to submit an essay. The report she submitted was about the STEM to STEAM movement. Karin’s essay addressed the importance of adding art to the current curriculum of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Karin also made a short documentary movie about the same topic. She was asked to present her documentary movie “STEM to STEAM” at the conference.
