WATERVILLE — Lexi Lewis is a freshman but she’s no field hockey novice.

Thursday night, she scored a goal in the second overtime period to lift Lawrence to a 3-2 win over Winslow in a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B matchup.

The goal, assisted by Molly Folsom following a penalty corner, was Lewis’ second of the game. Overtime periods last eight minutes and are played 7 on 7. Add in the turf at Thomas College and the format fit nicely into Lewis’ game.

“She works at it,” Lawrence coach Shawna Robinson said of Lewis’ game. “She’s a (Maine) Majestix kid. It’s her passion.”

Lawrence (6-2) tied the game when Lexi Laverdiere converted a rebound with 7:35 left to play. Weslee Littlefield and Anna Petrovic scored first-half goals for Winslow (3-4-1).

The Bulldogs, who beat Leavitt on Tuesday, wrap up their big week with a home game against unbeaten Gardiner on Saturday morning.

“Anytime it’s close I feel like we’re in it,” Robinson said. “I’m so proud of these kids.”

Both teams were among the best in Class B North last year — Winslow advanced to the state title game while Lawrence notched a dozen wins — and are trying to get back to that point after some key graduation losses.

“We’ve really done a lot of improving and adjusting every game,” Winslow coach Mary Beth Bourgoin said. “I’ve switched a lot of people around since the beginning of the season.”

The game was statistically even. Lawrence had 13 to Winslow’s 12 shots and nine penalty corners to eight for the Black Raiders. Bulldogs goalie Marian Ziasostowski made five saves while Winslow’s Hope Winkin made seven.

“It was a great game, both ways,” Bourgoin said. “Passing, speed and attacking. It was great both ways.”

Bourgoin coached Lewis with the Majestix and was constantly telling her defense to mark the precocious freshman.

“She’s a very skilled young lady,” Bourgoin said. “I knew that was going to be a point person for them, at least one of them.”

Lewis scored her game-winner following a penalty corner. Lauren Lambert put the ball in play and as it came to Folsom, Winkin came way out of her cage to stop it.

“Molly Folsom passed it and I knew we had it open,” Lewis said.

Winslow struck first with just under five minutes gone in the game as Littlefield knocked the ball in following a penalty corner.

“Originally I had Weslee Littlefield playing back and I moved her to mid,” Bourgoin said. “Then I had Haley Ryder helping out in the back but she’s up at a forward.”

Lewis tied the game with 8:34 left in the half after Macie Larouche crossed a ball to her uncovered on the left side. Petrovic put the Black Raiders up 2-1 with 2:35 left in the half with the assist going to Ryder.
