A Maine Warden Service pilot has resigned after being accused of assaulting a Bangor police officer at a country music concert this month.

Charles Later, 58, of Shirley submitted his resignation Monday to the warden service, Cpl. John MacDonald, a spokesman for the agency, said in a news release.

“Later’s resignation is effective today and comes in the wake of his recent alleged actions and subsequent arrest in Bangor,” MacDonald said.

Later was arrested Sept. 2 on charges of assault on an officer, refusal to submit to arrest or detention, criminal trespass and disorderly conduct.

Later was attending a concert by country artists Sammy Kershaw and Rowdy Yates at Bangor’s waterfront pavilion when he allegedly became combative and was arrested.

After his arrest, the warden service said it was conducting its own investigation into the incident.

Later was also arrested in 2012 on a domestic violence charge after his wife reported he was intoxicated, had smashed items in the house, thrown food, ripped the phone from the wall and shoved her, the Morning Sentinel newspaper reported.

Later was one of three full-time pilots assigned to the warden service’s Aviation Division. The division operates three airplanes.

MacDonald said the service is taking “appropriate measures to ensure the unit is prepared to respond to all search and rescue, law enforcement and resource management needs.”
