Police are asking for information about a bizarre situation in Portland that developed early Thursday morning in which someone apparently hung a dead cat from a stop sign.

The cat was spotted and reported to police about 6:20 a.m., said Portland police Lt. James Sweatt.

Police found the dead feline at the corner of Washington Avenue at Johansen Street.

Investigators determined that the cat, which had a white belly and tiger stripes on its back, had been killed by a car nearby, and that it was attached to the stop sign after it was already dead.

The cat was not wearing a collar and did not have a microchip, Sweatt said.

“We don’t know why anyone would want to hang a dead cat from a pole,” Sweatt said. “Right now there’s no crime of taking a dead animal and hanging it from a post. But we would certainly like to know why someone had done that.”
