Overall this weekend is what I would call a typical August weekend. While we’ve certainly seen day after day of sunshine this summer, a weekend with some showers in the forecast is part of a summer pattern as well.
A cold front will push through the region Saturday. The exact timing of this front tomorrow will determine if we see showers and thunderstorms and also if any storms reach strong or severe levels. Presently, I think this is more of a scattered shower event and not widespread strong or severe storms, but there is a risk of them. The good news is the system will move of the coast Saturday evening and the period from that point through Sunday evening will be dry with lowering levels of humidity.
I wouldn’t cancel any plans Saturday unless you need 100 percent assurance it won’t rain. Otherwise, just keep an eye to the sky and your favorite weather app and you should be able to dodge any rain showers or thunderstorms with ease.
If you are going hiking, or running…
Saturday will have clouds and those showers and storms. Any wet weather won’t last long. The chance for showers exists in the morning and early afternoon, last along the coastline and earliest inland. All areas should clear of rain during the early evening. Humidity will be high on Saturday and then lower on Sunday with highs in the 80s inland and 70s east of Brunswick and the higher elevations.
If you’re going beaching and boating…
In Portland and other east-facing beaches, the tides are high in the 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. range this weekend. Water temperatures are approaching their maximums for the year getting near 70 degrees south and in many coves, but still in the 60s and even 50s further east along Maine’s shoreline. Saturday isn’t a good beach day with clouds, but Sunday will be. Look for temperatures in the 70s to lower 80s each day.
If you’re playing soccer, softball, baseball, or golf…
Saturday’s forecast: There could be a few light showers in the morning wetting the playing fields and golf greens. Most of the time is dry, but you should be aware of the chance of showers through the day.
Sunday’s outlook: This is the pick of the weekend. Lower humidity, plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures makes this an ideal day for early August weekend activities.
If you’re gardening…
Drought, drought and more drought. Water what plants you can and get the weeds out. Remember weeds take water from your trees, shrubs, perennials and vegetables. Check moisture levels several inches down where the roots are and water for longer periods of time.
If you’re running errands…
Plan on doing errands on Saturday if it’s feasible for you to do. This will be the cloudiest day and the only day this weekend when rain is possible. Sunday’s weather looks ideal.
If you’re going to a concert, outdoor party, or wedding…
Humidity will be high on Saturday and you might briefly get wet. Sunday is the best day for spending the entire day outdoors.
I will be updating the forecast on Twitter @growingwisdom throughout the weekend.
