Portland’s ordinance raising the minimum age to buy tobacco products from 18 to 21 takes effect Wednesday.
The Portland City Council voted in June to raise the minimum age to buy cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, powdered tobacco and other tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes.
The new rule forbids anyone from selling, furnishing, giving away or offering to sell a tobacco product to anyone younger than 21. Stores that sell tobacco products must post visible notices where the products are available for purchase.
