CLINTON — A former selectman will face a member of the Road Committee for a seat on the Board of Selectmen in the election Tuesday.

Randy Clark and Brian Bickford are both running for the two-year board seat. The three-year seat up for election drew only one candidate, Jeffrey Towne.

Clark, 66, has lived in Clinton for 48 years and served as a selectman for about 12 years, although he was not re-elected last year. Clark also was chairman of the Clinton Water District board for more than 20 years throughout the 1970s and ’80s.

“I think everybody should help the town somehow,” Clark said in a phone interview Wednesday. He said he thinks serving as a selectman is how he can help best.

Keeping taxes down while maintaining services is the most important thing to Clark. After conducting a job study while a selectman, he said he fought for adjusted wages and health insurance for town workers, because he thinks the town can’t attract people to a job if the wage isn’t adequate.

Clark also said that if elected, he will try to do what is best for the majority.

“It’s not what I want. It’s what the people want,” he said.

Clark grew up on a farm in Unity and graduated from Lawrence High School. He worked at the Scott Paper Co. for 24 years and then at a Maine gas company for 20 years. He worked at Downeast Energy for four years before retiring about a year ago.

Bickford, who works for Fairfield’s Public Works Department, did not respond to messages seeking an interview this week.

Polls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the municipal banquet hall in Town Hall, on Baker Street.
