Portland police on Thursday identified a man who apparently drowned after falling into the water late Wednesday near Fish Point off the Eastern Promenade.

The body of 42-year-old Jonathan Knights of Portland was located near Portland Yacht Services just after midnight by the Portland Fire Department, according to Lt. James Sweatt, spokesman for the police department.

Sweatt said police were called to the Eastern Promenade walking path around 11:20 p.m. for a report that someone had fallen in the water between 58 Fore St. and Cutter Street. When police could not locate the person in the water, the Portland Fire Department’s Marine Unit and the U.S. Coast Guard were called to search for the victim. The victim was located near Portland Yacht Services about 12:15 a.m. by the Portland Fire Department.

People who were with the man told police that he had fallen about 10 or 15 feet off a rock sea wall and landed in the water. They talked to him while he was in the water and tried to get him to go to where they could help him, but eventually lost sight of him and called 911, Sweatt said in a news release.

Knights’ body was taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office to be examined.
