READFIELD — Following a humbling loss to Winslow on Friday, the Nokomis softball team on Monday afternoon took its frustrations out on Maranacook.

The Warriors banged out 13 hits, including five for extra bases, in a 15-2 win called after five innings due to the 12-run rule.

There’s no question Winslow will be one of the top teams in Class B North, but the Warriors didn’t take their bats off their shoulders in a shutout loss.

“We stood around and watched a lot,” Nokomis coach J.D. McLellan acknowledged. “We just wanted them to swing. The sun was in the eyes. So if you get it up it’s hard to see. Defensively, we played like we wanted to.”

The Warriors (2-1) got going right away as Audrey Davis beat out a bunt on the second pitch of the game. Davis is one of three seniors on a roster loaded with sophomores. She had a couple of bunt singles, scored three runs and made two nice plays at shortstop.

“I’m right handed so it was a little different to switch,” said Davis, who batted four times. “I’ve been working hard on my slap (hits) and that’s my goal for the end of the season is to have a grass hit slap.”

The Warriors scored three runs in the first, the big key a gap triple by Chelsea Crockett to right center. They added four more in the second, three in the third and five runs in the fourth.

Senior Libby Dunivan went the distance for the win and also drove in four runs with two singles and a double. She allowed seven hits, fanned six and didn’t walk anyone.

“She threw a lot of strikes and we were able to put the bat on the ball, which was nice coming off Winslow,” Dunivan said of Maranacook starter Paige Costa.

Despite the hits, Costa threw fairly well. Her defense committed four errors that extended a couple of innings, and three of Nokomis’ hits were bloopers just over the infield.

“She got a lot of experience early last year as a sophomore,” Maranacook co-coach Jeannine Paradis said. “It’s just getting the pitches consistent so she gets the calls she should get.”

Freshman Maci Leali led off with the first of her two doubles. She later came around to score on a blooper to short left by Aren Herrick. Dunivan followed with a blast to left that scored Herrick but was thrown out on the relay as she tried for a triple.

The Black Bears (1-2) got on the board in the fourth inning after Kaylee Jones singled and Taylor Rioux reached on an error. Sierra Weaver singled in Jones and Rioux scored on a wild pitch. Jones paced Maranacook with a pair of hits while Leighton also singled and doubled for Nokomis.
