For the second year in a row, Lawrence High School’s Nia Irving is Maine’s Gatorade Girls Basketball Player of the Year.

Irving, a 6-foot-1 senior center, averaged 25.6 points and 21.1 rebounds per game this season while shooting 57 percent from inside the arc. She led Lawrence to a 21-1 record and its second consecutive Class A state championship game.

The four-time Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference player of the year is also a finalist for Miss Maine Basketball, the winner of which will be announced Friday night in Bangor. In her career, she scored 1,761 points and grabbed 1,206 rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Gatorade selects award winners based on athletic production and impact in the 2015-16 season.

“The hard work and commitment Nia Irving has made to her game has been incredible,” said Tim Scott, coach at KVAC rival Hampden Academy. “She has become a very hard-working and special teammate for the Lawrence team. She has deserved all the accolades that have come her way. She is not only a great player but also a highly respected opponent. She plays the game the right way.”

Winners also demonstrate high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership.

Irving is a member of the National Honor Society at Lawrence and maintains a 100.7 weighted average. She has volunteered on behalf of a local homeless shelter, as a peer tutor and as a youth basketball coach.

In November, she signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball on scholarship at Boston University in the fall.

Irving won the Gatorade award as a junior after bouncing back from a serious knee injury to average 22.5 points and 14 rebounds per game and leading the Bulldogs to a 21-1 record and the Class A state title.
