MADISON — Madeline Wood scored 11 points and No. 4 Madison had to hold off a late charge by No. 13 Waynflete for a 39-38 win in a Class C South girls basketball preliminary round game Tuesday night.

Madison (12-7) advanced to the quarterfinals, where it will face No. 12 Traip Academy at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Augusta Civic Center. Traip (8-11) upset No. 5 Hebron Academy, 55-21, on Tuesday night.

Madison limited Waynflete to just two first quarter points and led by three at the half. The Bulldogs took a 31-21 lead into the fourth quarter but saw the Flyers battle back with 17 points in the fourth quarter to make it close.

Kayla Bess added nine points and nine rebounds for the Bulldogs, while Lauren Hay chipped in with eight points and 11 rebounds. Erin Whalen also reached double digits on the boards with 10.

Lydia Giguere led all scorers with 16 points for the Rangers (7-12).

UNIFIED BASKETBALL

MESSALONSKEE 60, CONY 40: Shawn McIntyre scored 14 points and Tyler Ward added 12 as the Eagles rolled to the victory in Oakland.

Matthew Baker scored 22 points to lead all scorers for Cony.
