CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Stephanie Watts made a 3-pointer at the buzzer Friday to give the University of North Carolina women’s basketball team a 59-58 win over Maine.
With two seconds left and the ball on North Carolina’s baseline, Xylina McDaniel one-touched the inbounds pass to Watts in the corner to set up the winning shot.
Sigi Koizar, who scored a game-high 21 points, led a second-half comeback that had Maine rallying from a 43-30 deficit with 4:29 left in the third quarter. Koizar scored Maine’s final eight points, including a jumper with four seconds left for a 58-56 lead.
Sophie Weckstrom made a career-high six 3-pointers for 18 points, and Mikaela Gustafsson recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Black Bears (9-6) struggled in the first half, making just 9 of 32 field goals, including 3 of 15 in the first quarter. Despite the poor shooting, Maine trailed just 31-25 at halftime.
Watts finished with 18 points, and Hillary Summers added 10 points with 11 rebounds for the Tar Heels (10-5).
The Black Bears open their America East Conference schedule Wednesday at Vermont.
SOUTHERN MAINE 82, FRAMINGHAM STATE 72: Megan Pelletier scored 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Huskies (6-5) over the Rams (7-4) at Worcester, Massachusetts.
Pelletier, who made 11 of 25 field goals and 6 of 6 free throws, scored 10 points in the fourth quarter when the Huskies outscored the Rams 22-12.
Ella Ramonas added 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists, and Gretchen Anderson had 13 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and three steals.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
BATES 83, BABSON 78: Marcus Delpeche scored 21 points as the Bobcats (5-5) defeated the Beavers (6-4) at Lewiston.
Malcolm Delpeche added 16 points and Mike Boornazian finished with 15 for the Bobcats, who took the lead for good 20-18 with 8:59 left in the first half on a 3-pointer by Shawn Strickland.
Strickland scored 12 points.
Joey Flannery had 35 points for Babson.
