WINSLOW — Winslow boys hockey coach Andy Dube didn’t know what to expect when his team opened the season Saturday night against visiting Old Town/Orono.
“The first one is always tough,” Dube said. “It’s always a battle because you just don’t know. It’s always good to get that first one out of the way.”
It’s even better when you come away a winner.
Jimmy Fowler scored a goal and assisted on two others to lead the Black Raiders past the Coyotes 3-1 in a Class B North game at Sukee Arena.
Jacob Grenier and Jake Trask — Fowler’s linemates — scored the other goals for Winslow (1-0-0).
“It’s a powerful line,” Dube said. “They apply a lot of pressure. They really stepped up and allowed us to set up some good things. They moved the puck well, passed well and just made good plays.”
Grenier and Fowler gave the Raiders a 2-0 lead when they scored about a minute apart early in the first period.
“Scoring those goals was big,” Dube said. “Getting those first goals, they never come easy and you have to earn them, which we did.”
The score stayed that way until Chris Hoxie pulled the Coyotes within one when he beat Winslow goalie Andrew Beals just 11:40 into the second period.
Trask gave Winslow a little breathing room when he scored just 3:25 into the third period.
“Old Town/Orono is a good team,” Dube said. “It really was a good hockey game. It was back and forth.”
Beals finished with 17 saves while Nick Gurney also had an assist.
“This was a tough one,” Dube said, “but we pulled through.”
MESSALONSKEE 8, BREWER 3: Jared Cunningham scored three goals and added an assist as the Eagles rolled past the Witches in a Class B North game. Brandon Nale scored and Dylan Burton each scored twice for the Eagles (1-0-0). Dylan Brown also scored.

WATERVILLE 11, HAMPDEN 0: Andrew Roderigue and Jackson Aldrich each scored three goals as the Purple Panthers rolled past the Broncos in a B North game.
Aldrich also added a pair of assists.
