FARMINGTON – A hit-and-run on Monday at the intersection of U.S. Route 2 and Whittier Road in Farmington resulted in no injuries, but police still are looking for the driver who caused the accident.
Around noon, Conley Gould Sr., 78, of Madrid Township was driving a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country van east on Wilton Road when a vehicle pulled out of Whittier Road, struck the passenger side of the van and drove off without stopping, Farmington police Officer Justin Blais said.
While Gould didn’t remember much about the vehicle, police think it may have been a 2008 Silver Ford Focus that now would have significant front-end damage.
In the van with Conley was his wife, Glennis, 78, and Betty Carrier, 56, of Phillips. No one was injured.
Conley told Blais at the scene that he tried to avoid hitting the car as it pulled out from the stop sign on Whittier Road and turned west toward Wilton, but he couldn’t avoid it entirely and the passenger sides of both vehicles struck each other.
Blais told Wilton police that the car was seen last heading toward that town, but the department was busy with another call and no one was able to look for it.
Police found a passenger-side headlight and a Ford decal that had come off the vehicle at the scene. Blais said the vehicle must have sustained significant damage and most likely only has half of a front bumper left.
Blais checked with Farmington Ford about the headlight left at the scene, and a mechanic told him it most likely came from a 2008 Ford Focus.
Gould and his passengers thought the vehicle was silver, but could not provide any other details because they were in shock, Blais said.
Gould’s van was in good enough shape to be driven from the scene, but it sustained about $1,000 worth of body damage to the passenger side, Blais said.
Farmington Fire and Rescue responded to the accident report but stayed only briefly since no one was injured and traffic was not disrupted, he said.
Farmington police have alerted other police departments to be on the lookout for a damaged 2008 Silver Ford Focus, and they will continue the investigation.
