The driver in a fatal hit-and-run accident in Turner has been arrested.

Kevin T. Scribner, 27, of Harrison, was arrested on a felony count of leaving the scene of an accident involving death or serious bodily injury, according to the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department.

The accident killed 21-year-old Brittany Stanhope, who was parked in the breakdown lane of Buckfield Road when she was struck by a truck on Buckfield Road in Turner at 8:50 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Stanhope was standing outside her disabled car and reaching for something in the backseat when she was hit. She and a passenger were in the breakdown lane because their car had mechanical difficulties.

Police had been seeking a dark-colored Ford pickup with possible damage to its front passenger side.

The sheriff’s department received a call the morning after the accident from a 27-year-old Harrison man who told them he thought he had struck a deer and didn’t realize he’d hit a person. He called police after seeing media reports. The man was not identified by authorities at the time; officials said he was cooperating with officials. His vehicle, a Ford pickup truck, was taken to the Maine State Police Crime Lab in Augusta for examination.

Scribner was taken to Androscoggin County Jail, with bail set at $5,000.
