SKOWHEGAN — A Skowhegan woman has been charged with felony acquiring drugs by deception for allegedly filling duplicate prescriptions from two doctors over a period of several months, police said Tuesday.
Jessica Raymond, 39, of Gilblair Street, is charged with getting prescriptions for methylphenidate and then selling the drug in the Skowhegan area, Detective Joshua King said Tuesday.
Methylphenidate is a central nervous system stimulant used to treat attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy, a condition of uncontrollable sleepiness. Brand names for the drug include Daytrana, Concerta, Ritalin and Methylin.
“We determined that the drugs were being sold in the Skowhegan area through interviews with involved parties,” King said.
The Skowhegan Police Department learned from the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department at the end of July about possible diversion of scheduled drugs. King confirmed that duplicate prescriptions for methylphenidate had been prescribed by two doctors for several months and had been filled by Raymond.
Raymond said the drugs were intended for her child. The estimated value of the drugs is $1,500, according to King.
After confirming the duplicate prescriptions had been filled, investigators got a search warrant for Raymond’s apartment. King and Officer Michael Bachelder searched the home and recovered receipts for the fraudulently obtained drugs.
“It was determined through investigation that the drugs were being sold illicitly in the Skowhegan area,” police Chief Don Bolduc said.
Raymond is charged with acquiring schedule W drugs by deception, a class C felony. Her first court date is scheduled for Oct. 14 in Skowhegan Unified Court.
If convicted, Raymond faces up to five years in jail and $5,000 in fines.
