A Kingfield man was arrested Wednesday night after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase down Route 4.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department charged John Hinkley, 47, with attempting to elude a police officer, driving to endanger, criminal speeding and refusing to submit to arrest or detention, according to a news release from the sheriff’s department.

The Farmington Police Department also charged Hinkley with refusing to stop for a police officer and operating under the influence.

A Farmington police officer originally tried to stop Hinkley near the intersection of Route 4 and Route 27, according to the release. The officer clocked Hinkley driving around 80 mph in an area where the speed limit is 45 mph.

The sheriff’s department assisted in deploying a spike mat about 12 miles away near the Maine Fish and Wildlife building in Strong. The vehicle continued on Route 4 until all four tires were deflated, according to the release. Speeds averaged 75 mph to 80 mph.
