The four-day Pittston Fair, which is scheduled to begin Thursday, is holding a 5-kilometer race in honor of a local woman who was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, nearly three years ago.

The race, beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday with registration at 6:30 a.m., is called “Carole’s Run” for Carole Marson. All proceeds from the race will go to the ALS Association Northern New England Chapter, said Peter Weeks, vice president of the Pittston Fair Association.

Marson’s husband, Steven Marson, of Pittston, whose company is putting on the fireworks show, will match funds from the race up to $3,000. Steven Marson said his wife also plans to attend the race Sunday.

The fair’s big night will be Friday, Weeks said, the night of the fireworks and a performance by Motor Booty Affair. He said each year around 7,000 to 8,000 people attend the agricultural fair at the Pittston Fairgrounds on Route 194.
