We veterans would like to thank the area fire departments and others who have put the American flag on the telephone poles in the greater Gardiner area, as well as all the area merchants and people at their homes who fly the flag.

These displays of the American flag show a high level of patriotism and how much the community appreciates the veterans for what they have done to give us the freedoms that we enjoy today. The flag shows a high respect for the veterans and their sacrifices: All gave some and some gave all.

Any old or unusable flags should be taken to any American Legion Post to be retired with honor. At Smith-Wiley Post, we give free flags to schools and veteran memorials. The post members were pleased at the turnout of spectators for our Memorial Day Parade. It was great that it was enjoyed by so many. We also thank the Gardiner police for their assistance.

Roger J. Paradis, adjutant
