NORRIDGEWOCK — Construction of a new fire station is underway, and Town Manager Michelle Flewelling said the building is expected to be completed by late fall.
The first concrete for the building was poured Wednesday, and crews were back at the site at 22 Main St. on Thursday.
The town has been planning a new fire station for many years, and building plans were drawn in 2009. Construction was delayed, however, because the town didn’t get a grant it had applied for that was needed to pay for the project.
The total cost of construction is $819,939, which will come from capital reserve, undesignated money in the budget and tax increment financing money, all approved in March at Town Meeting. Flewelling said no additional money will be needed for the project.
There are no plans yet for what might become of the old station at 70 Main St.
She said the building’s future “comes up from time to time, but we’ve had some other projects that we really needed to get underway and get work done on.”
“I think the Board of Selectmen plans to start having that conversation this summer,” she said. “We ask people all the time what we should do, and we’ve had a couple of folks interested in buying it, possibly for commercial use.”
Another possibility includes the town keeping the station for storage, Flewelling said.
