A Scarborough home is likely a total loss after a fire Friday that started behind the building on Beaver Brook Road.

A leaking propane tank appears to have accelerated the fire, but its cause is unknown, said Scarborough Deputy Fire Chief Tony Attardo.

Attardo said no one was at home when the fire started around 10:30 a.m., but neighbors helped two dogs get out safely.

He said the Red Cross is helping the residents, a family of four, find a place to stay for the night.

The home is owned by Martin Geesaman, according to town assessing records.
