FARMINGTON — Colton Lawrence didn’t really need it, but Mt. Blue came through with its best offensive performance of the year anyway.

Lawrence fired a three-hitter, and also had two of Mt. Blue’s 12 hits, as the Cougars defeated Skowhegan, 11-1, in Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A baseball action Monday afternoon at Hippach Field.

“Colton, when he works ahead — which he was ahead most of the game — he’s very dominant,” Mt. Blue coach Christian Boileau said.

The Cougars lost their opener to Brunswick 4-2, before beating Edward Little, 3-2. On Monday, they scored in five of their six innings, including three runs in the second, two in the third, and four in the fifth. The game ended via the 10-run rule when Mt. Blue scored a run in the bottom of the sixth.

Lawrence walked one and struck out 11 in the complete-game win. The one run he allowed, in the third inning, was unearned. Meanwhile, Ryan Pratt had three hits and Anthony Franchetti singled twice for Mt. Blue (2-1).

Of Mt. Blue’s 12 hits, 11 were singles, but there were more than enough to do some damage, and the Cougars put the ball in play.

“Coming out of the gym, we didn’t have many scrimmages, (it’s) a tough spot for us,” Boileau said. “We’re swinging the bats, and just building that confidence. That’s definitely shining through at this point as well.”

Skowhegan (0-2) has four hits over two games, but the Indians faced pitching-loaded Messalonskee in the opener and then Lawrence at his best on Monday. They’ll look to get their bats going on Wednesday against Mt. Ararat, which has allowed 36 runs in three games this spring.
