AUGUSTA — Only two candidates will be on the June special election ballot in Augusta — one for an at-large City Council position, the other for an at-large Board of Education post.
Dan Emery, a former city councilor, was the only candidate to return nomination papers for the at-large council position by the Thursday deadline.
Edward Hastings, a relative political newcomer, was the only candidate to return papers for the at-large school board position, according to City Clerk Barbara Wardwell.
The council position became vacant when the seat’s former holder, David Rollins, was elected mayor last November.
The school board position, meanwhile, also became vacant as a result of the November elections, with former seat holder Kimberly Martin being elected chairwoman of the board.
Both candidates, if they win what will be officially uncontested elections, will fill the remaining time left on the terms previously held by Rollins and Martin.
Emery would serve from June until January, as the position would be up for election again in November, with whoever is elected then taking office in early January.
Hastings would have a year’s term on the school board before the position is up for election again in November 2016.
The special election is set for June 9.
Voters also are expected to decide referendum questions on the proposed school budget as part of the election.
