Porter Preserve Hike, 10 a.m. in Boothbay

Appalachian Trail Lessons, 8 a.m. in Lewiston

The Maine Appalachian Trail Club welcomes the public to its spring meeting, which will feature Appalachian Trail news and workshops. The meeting is open to individuals interested in learning about Maine’s section of the Appalachian Trail and volunteer opportunities. The meeting is at Bates College’s Schaeffer Theatre on 305 College St. Registration is at 8 a.m. and the free workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. To learn more, go to matc.org. Founded in 1935, the Maine Appalachian Trail Club manages and maintains 267 miles of the Appalachian Trail in Maine.

Bird Extravaganza, 7:30 a.m. April 18 in Bath

The public is invited to attend a series of free bird watching adventures sponsored by five conservation organizations in midcoast Maine this April and May. Merrymeeting Audubon, Kennebec Estuary Land Trust, Harpswell Heritage Land Trust, Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust and Phippsburg Land Trust have collaborated to offer seven opportunities to watch and learn about birds while visiting natural places, including forests, farms and ocean shorelines. The first outing is April 18 at the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust’s Sewall Woods Preserve in Bath, led by Merrymeeting Audubon. The group will hike along Whiskeag Creek, a tidal-influenced stream that flows into the Kennebec River. Birders will seek migrating waterfowl including Canada geese, black ducks, mallards, blue- and green-winged teal, and common mergansers. Participants can meet at the CVS in Bath to carpool.
