HARTFORD, Conn. — Trinity College’s Daniel Pidgeon blasted a three-run, walk-off home run over the right field fence in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Bantams to a 5-4 win over Colby College on Friday afternoon at Highland Park in the New England Small College Athletic Conference baseball opener for both teams.
A three-run, inside-the-park home run by the Mules’ Daniel Csaplar with two outs in the top of the eighth inning had given Colby (9-4, 0-1) a 4-2 lead prior to the dramatic finish. Ryder Arsenault also had a strong game at the plate for the Mules, going 2-for-4 with a double and a stolen base.
Pidgeon, Evan Abraham and Connor Sullivan each had two hits for Trinity (9-5, 1-0), while Sam Jordan picked up the win after allowing one unearned run while striking out four in two innings of relief.
HUSSON 1-13, THOMAS 0-0: Four Husson pitchers combined to allow nine hits in 18 innings to toss shutouts in both ends of a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader with Thomas at the John Winkin Complex in Bangor.
Husson (13-7, 9-0) won the first game on Ryan Rebar’s RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning. Corey Mongiat picked up the win with one inning in relief of starter Ben Walls, who went 10 innings and allowed four hits.
Brandon Reilly tossed a three-hit shutout for six innings to pick up the win in the nightcap, with Zak Kochis tossing a scoreless inning of relief to close it out. Waterville’s J.T. Whitten led the offense by going 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Derek Kane and Nick Beeson had two hits apiece for the Terriers (4-10, 2-4).
STONY BROOK 8-3, MAINE 5-1: The Seawolves outlasted the Black Bears in a 13-inning marathon in Game 1 then put the finishing touches on a doubleheader sweep in Game 2 at Mahaney Diamond in Orono.
In the opener, Stony Brook rallied from a 4-1 deficit with two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to force extras, then scored three in the top of the 13th to win. The two teams combined for 36 hits.
Kevin Kernan and Cameron Stone combined to limit Maine to four hits as Stony Brook (12-11, 6-2 America East) won the nightcap. Scott Heath drove in the lone run for the Black Bears (9-17, 1-4) and also took the loss on the mound, yielding eight hits, a walk and three earned runs while fanning four in seven innings.
SOFTBALL
TRINITY 7-4, COLBY 5-10: The Mules and Bantams combined to score 26 runs and club 20 extra-base hits in a split of a NESCAC doubleheader in Hartford, Conn.
Erica Quinones paced Trinity (4-10, 1-1) in Game 1, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and four RBIs. Colby (5-8, 1-1) got all four of its runs on home runs in the opener, two on a Katie McLaughlin shot and the remainder on solo homers from Meaghan Lewia and Skylar Labbe.
The Mules led from start to finish in the second game thanks to a strong offensive performance from Labbe (3-for-4, two RBIs and two runs scored) and solid pitching from Julia Saul. Michelle Treglia and Katharine Haghdan combined to go 5-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Bantams.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
UMF 20, DANIEL WEBSTER 1: Messalonskee graduate Maddi Kadnar had four goals and an assist as the Beavers picked up their first win of the season in Henniker, N.H.
Sierra Gilley finished with three goals for UMF (1-5, 0-2 NAC), while Carly Raymond, Sasha Hampton, Alaina Shorey and Ayla Allen each scored twice.
Alexis Pavelock had the lone goal for Daniel Webster (0-5, 0-2 New England Collegiate Conference).
