Emily Greaney, of Mercer, a Skowhegan Area High School senior, has been selected to receive the 2015 Principal’s Award. The award, sponsored by the Maine Princpals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship, according to a news release from the school.
Greaney is certainly deserving of this award because of her dedication to her studies and her involvement in extracurricular offerings and opportunities at Skowhegan Area High School. Greaney has challenged herself with honors and advanced placements courses and is now in the top 10 of her class. She is a key member of the school’s math team and attended Dirigo Girls’ State as a junior. She also participated in a variety of volunteer opportunities in the school and community, including Big Brothers/Big Sisters and assisting at a local veterans’ hospital. Her strong character is demonstrated each day at school, as well as at home, where she holds a lead role in the family business. She is a “wonderful” representative of SAHS, according to the release.
Greaney, Principal Monique Poulin, and other award winners and their principals will attend an honors luncheon April 11 at the Spectacular Event Center in Bangor.
The luncheon recognizes these outstanding students with the presentation of an individual plaque and the awarding of five $1,000 scholarships in the names of Horace O. McGowan and Richard W. Tyler. McGowan and Tyler were former Maine principals and executive directors of the association. This year an additional five $1,000 scholarships will be presented through the efforts of the MPA Scholarship Golf Tournament.
