The National Geographic Society has named Peter Butera, Timothy Doyle, Sam McKee, Anthony Romano and Jacob Smith semifinalists and are eligible to compete in the 2015 Maine National Geographic State Bee, sponsored by Google and Plum Creek. These students each won their individual school’s competition of the National Geographic Bee.
• Butera, son of Laura Renick-Butera and John Butera, is a fourth-grade student at Albert S. Hall School in Waterville.

• McKee, son of Chris and Kimberly McKee, is a fifth-grade student at Wayne Elementary School.
• Romano, son of Jeff Romano and Maria Fuentes, is an eighth-grade student at Hall-Dale Middle School in Farmingdale.
• Smith, son of Rachel and John Smith, is a sixth-grade student at Winthrop Middle School.
The contest will be held Friday, March 27, at the University of Maine at Farmington, according to a new release from the society.
This is the second level of the National Geographic Bee competition, which is now in its 27th year.
Each state champion will receive $100, the “National Geographic Atlas of the World, 10th Edition,” a medal, and a trip to Washington, D.C., to represent their state in the National Geographic Bee Championship at the Society’s headquarters May 11-13, according to the release.
