‘Life of Fort Western Soldier’ featured March 15 in Augusta

AUGUSTA — Old Fort Western’s winter lecture series will feature “Life of a Fort Western Soldier during the French and Indian War” by the James Howard’s Company of Old Fort Western Sunday, March 15. The Company will present a Shakespearean-style history production that focuses on aspects of a soldiers life at Fort Western during the military period, 1754-1759, according to a news release from the Fort.

Using language and quotes from original 18th century documents, presenters will take the audience back in time in the form of first-person accounts that address the challenges of everyday life on the new frontier, religious attitudes and practice, and the anticipation of War with the French and Abenaki.

Old Fort Western’s 2015 Winter Lecture Series: Witches, Warfare and Settlement of Colonial New England takes place from 2 to 4 p.m. Sundays during March in the Lecture Hall of Augusta City Center, 16 Cony St.

James Howard’s Company is an educational and living history re-enactment unit based out of and in association with Old Fort Western. The Company is dedicated to preserving and promoting Old Fort Western by demonstrating and interpreting the military history, mission, equipment skills and experiences of its military provincial garrison forces during the French and Indian War years of 1754-67, according to the release. The Company takes its name from Captain James Howard, Fort Western’s commander.
