This Jan. 7, 1996, file photograph comes from the Portland Press Herald’s digital archives. “A vibrant game of pickup hockey takes place on Mill Pond in Freeport thanks to the work of Gerry Kennedy and his neighbors,” states the original caption.

Press Herald photographer Shawn Patrick Ouellette captured a similar scene at the rink at Riverside Golf Course in Portland on the afternoon of March 3, 2015. The players had tipped the goal on its side to make a more challenging target.
