A Fairfield man is wanted on charges that he broke into a sporting camp in northern Somerset County and stole two stoves.

The Somerset County Sheriff’s Department is asking for the public’s help in finding Christopher Wallace, 24, of Fairfield, who is a suspect in the theft from a camp in Pierce Pond Township. A warrant for his arrest has been issued, according to the department.

Forest Ranger Shane Nichols notified the sheriff’s office on Jan. 15 of a burglary at the camp, during which a propane cook stove and a cast-iron wood stove were taken, according to a news release from the sheriff’s department. Nichols discovered the burglary while investigating a fuel theft in the same location that wasn’t related to the stove thefts.

Evidence gathered at the scene, including still photos from a game camera set up by Nichols, provided enough cause the department to get a search warrant for Wallace’s residence on Norridgewock Road in Fairfield, where the wood stove was recovered, according to the sheriff’s office.

Additional information gathered at Wallace’s home led to the recovery of the propane stove at a residence in Skowhegan, the release said

The case is under investigation and others are expected to be charged later. Police ask that anyone with information about the burglary call 474-6386 or the tip line at 474-0230.
