With little or no snow in sight this week, Maine will have to contend with a different weather threat.

The National Weather Service in Gray issued a wind chill advisory Monday night that will remain in effect through Tuesday morning. Wind chills could reach “dangerous” levels, the weather service said, with gusts making it feel like it’s 25 degrees below zero in southern and coastal Maine – and 40 below in northern Maine.

Forecasters were predicting an overnight low of 9 degrees below zero in Portland – just 4 degrees higher than the record set in 1894.

Stacie Hanes, a meteorologist with the weather service, said the temperature in Portland was down to 5 degrees by 7:30 p.m. Monday, and the wind chill made it feel like 13 degrees below zero.

Hanes said the temperature would continue to plummet overnight. “It’s possible we break the record,” she said.

Hanes said a cold mass from the Arctic moved into Maine on Monday and will linger for a few days. The only chance of snow this week will come late Tuesday into Wednesday, with forecasts calling for 1 to 3 inches.
