SKOWHEGAN — A local man remains in jail this week after his arrest Monday for allegedly threatening family members with a machete.

Mykel I. Hewey, 27, of Skowhegan, also has agreed to enroll in a pre-trial contract for supervision once he makes the $500 cash bail, according to court documents. He had not posted bail by Wednesday afternoon, according to a jail intake officer.

Hewey is charged with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, a class C felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

He has not entered a plea on the charge and is expected to apply for a court appointed attorney.

Hewey was intoxicated just after midnight Monday morning when his mother dialed 911 to report her son was threatening his father with a machete, according to a police affidavit. He “had been drunk on hard liquor for the past couple of days,” his mother told Skowhegan police Sgt. Joel Cummings.

A Somerset County dispatcher remained on the phone with Hewey’s mother as police arrived, according to the affidavit. The father told police that his son was “facing him with the machete in his hand,” telling the father that he was going to kill him and repeating it several times, Cummings wrote in the document.

Hewey denied having the machete and denied threatening his father, according to the report. Police later found the weapon upstairs in the house and arrested Hewey.

He has agreed to enroll in a court-ordered tracking program and must comply with the Somerset County Community Corrections Program when he is released.

The Triple C program replaced contracted pre-trial services about two years ago. The program is run from the county jail under the direction of the sheriff’s department.

Program participants must call in every day and be tested twice weekly for drugs after they are released from jail. Hewey also will have an 8 p.m.-to-6 a.m. curfew when he gets out.

Police also have the authority to search his home or person to make sure he does not have illegal drugs or alcohol that he isn’t supposed to have under the conditions of his release.

Hewey has a March 25 court date.
