Five-time Grammy award winner Mary Chapin Carpenter will perform at the Waterville Opera House in April, one of as many as a dozen concerts that will be booked in the city this year as part of a continuing collaboration between promoter Erik Thomas and the State Theatre in Portland.

The first show of the year is scheduled for March 3, when the band Los Lobos plays at the Opera House.

The April 20 show is part of a series of acoustic performances by Carpenter this spring presented by Thomas and his company, Sweet People Productions.

The tour marks Carpenter’s return to acoustic shows after performing with orchestras in early 2014. Carpenter, a 2012 Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, will be joined on stage by Jon Carroll on piano and John Doyle on guitars and bouzouki.

“She’s mainly known for her work as a country artist, although her more recent work is better classified as Americana,” Thomas said. “It’s always exciting working with an artist of this caliber and particularly when the show is right here in Waterville.”

Carpenter has spent the past year performing with orchestras since the release of her debut orchestral album, “Songs From the Movie,” which was conducted and arranged by six-time Grammy Award winner Vince Mendoza. In March, she performed two concerts at New York’s Lincoln Center with the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Mendoza, and was joined on stage by Joan Baez, Shawn Colvin, Jerry Douglas, Tift Merritt and Aoife O’Donovan.

Over the course of her career, Carpenter has sold more than 13 million records. With hits such as “Passionate Kisses” and “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her,” she has won five Grammy Awards (with 15 nominations), two Country Music Association awards and two Academy of Country Music awards for her vocals.

Opening for Carpenter will be Lunasa. Tickets are available now to Opera House members and go on sale to the public Friday.
